Do you believe in star signs? For thousands of years, astrologists and wise mystics have been looking to the skies above for answers to some of the most profound questions imaginable. ‘What should I do with my life?’, ‘Will I find true love?’, or ‘Will George RR Martin ever finish The Game of Thrones series?’.
In the office recently, we’ve been asking each other: ‘I’ve finished my book… now what??’.
If you’re in a similar pickle, we’ve curated a selection of interesting 2025 books to match perfectly to your own star sign. Whether you’re a down-to-earth Virgo, an off-the-wall Gemini, or a sensitive (or perhaps crabby?) Cancer, we’ve found something for you, so continue reading to find your next great read.
We’ve consulted the stars, as well as The Bookseller magazine, and we can foresee successful reading times ahead.
Aries
If you’ve ever met an Aries, you’d have known it soon after meeting them! Often considered the bold and ambitious sign of the zodiac, they’re also passionate and know exactly what they like. Their driven personality often sends them in a sporty direction so a book that focuses on that type of mindset would be perfect. Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel, published by Willoughby faves, Daunt. Bullwinkel’s debut novel, it follows eight teenage girls as they train and fight over the course of 48 hours. A coming-of-age story, it’s a beautiful, raw portrayal of youth, desire, passion, and determination.
Taurus
If you know anything about a Taurus personality, you’ll know they are super grounded and practical in their approach to the everyday. Book-wise, something quite direct and (perhaps deceptively) simplistic would be a good selection for your favourite Taurean. Some of the best and most thoughtful books I’ve read have swerved florid use of language in favour of something sparer. A title from Sally Rooney like Intermezzo would really work well. Known for her big ideas and gut-punch observations of modern relationships, this one has just come out in paperback, so go, go, go!
Gemini
Geminis can be loveable oddballs. They’re the ones that keep you laughing with their wit and playful curiosity. They’re also super clever! Select a book such as Muckle Flugga by Michael Pedersen. Poetic in its prose style, it follows the characters of The Father, a lighthouse keeper, his son Ouse, and an outsider named Firth who has arrived on their remote island of Muckle Flugga. It’s weird, it’s moving and will have you fizzing with its original storytelling.
Cancer
If you know any Cancerians, you may be aware that family life and the domestic sphere are incredibly important to them. Willoughby favourite Sarah Moss has released Ripeness to much excited, critical chatter. Told from alternating perspectives and spanning Ireland to Italy and back again, it’s a book of belonging, family, and identity, as well as a riveting and deftly told narrative that will catch you very much unawares.
Leo
When I think of a Leo, the words ‘courage’ and ‘big-hearted’ come to mind. And I cannot think of a more fitting writer to represent this sign of the zodiac than Elizabeth Strout! Tell Me Everything is the definition of a comfort read. Strout has the amazing ability to write brilliantly and warmly without resorting to schmaltz. It fits into the loose ‘Amgash’ series of books that contains several recurring characters who all live in the same small Maine town of Crosby. Full of vivid characters and great dialogue, Strout is the queen of heartfelt stories that you can trust to put you right. She’s a tonic for these trying times and perfect for your favourite Leo.
Virgo
Virgos are deeply connected to the Earth. They enjoy nothing more than to wander through nature. In recent years there’s been a revival of interest in British folk history. Writers like Benjamin Myers, Max Porter and Andrew Michael Hurley have all been exploring folk elements in their work, with titles such as The Gallows Pole, The Perfect Golden Circle, Lanny and Starve Acre being loved by readers and critics alike. The Lost Folk: From the Forgotten Past to the Emerging Future of Folk by Lally MacBeth promises to be a fascinating exploration of local culture and nature and customs, in a way that includes rather excludes -perfect for an earthly Virgo!
Libra
Libras are the aesthetes of the zodiac. Artistic at their core, they know something good when they see (or read) it. One read of an Evie Wyld-written paragraph, and you know you’re in perfectly safe hands and so will your favourite Libran. The author of All the Birds, Singing and The Bass Rock returns with another stunner. A ghost story, a love story and a mystery story all in one, The Echoes is a profound and beautifully written piece of literary fiction that will stop you in its tracks with Wyld’s characteristically poetic turns of phrase. With themes of memory, trauma, and family, it’ll scratch a Libran’s itch for a deeper narrative, well-told.
Scorpio
Scorpios won’t show their cards easily. Enigmatic and a little bit secretive, they are also extremely loyal and will do anything for their friends and family. A book with an interesting mystery at its core would be a good selection for your local Scorpion. The God of the Woods by Liz Moore is truly the book of the summer, with an enthralling tale of a missing teenage in the Adirondack mountains in the 1970s. Multiple threads are deftly woven by Moore, who creates a palpable atmosphere through her use of setting, family secrets and an interesting use of a non-linear timeline.
Sagittarius
Sagittarians are naturally curious and have a deep-seated desire to travel, so a novel that shifts physical location and has an unusual mystery at the centre of it, is certain to pique their interest. Scarlett Thomas, best known for her novels The End of Mr Y and Bright Young Things, is back with a dark and twisty thriller set on a remote Greek island. The Sleepwalkers is a modern gothic story with White Lotus comparisons. When newlyweds Evelyn and Richard arrive at their idyllic resort, surrounded by beautiful people and a hostile hotel owner with only eyes for Richard, the story of the sleepwalkers, a couple who recently drowned at the resort, comes to light. What do Isabella the owner, Hamza a cagey man living in the island, and the owner of the local antique shop, all have to do with the mystery?
If you know of a Sagittarian in need of an intriguing plot and armchair travel, The Sleepwalkers is an ideal pick!
Capricorn
Capricorns live for the fun times. Often considered the partiers of the zodiac, they’ll suit books that allow them to continue this crazy journey, even when sat in their reading spot! The Wedding People by Alison Espach is a joyful and hilarious story about a friendship that strikes up between a bride-to-be and the sole guest at a Rhode Island hotel not there to attend her wedding. It’s a funny, slightly absurd- and surprisingly wise- novel of friendship, dysfunctional families and chance encounters that can change the course of your life.
Aquarius
Aquarians are a little offbeat and tend to go against the grain in terms of their social habits. They are also deeply humanitarian and loathe injustice, so something like Neon Roses by Rachel Dawson would fit the bill. There are vibrant, queer and working-class voices, a buzzy coming-of-age narrative set against the backdrop of the miners strikes in the 80s, and a love story that takes its course among the artist squats, lesbian bars and radical bookshops of Cardiff, London and Manchester. It’s a punchy novel with a great flow to it. It's funny, impeccably researched and will have you wanting to make zines and join a union.
Pisces
Pisces are empathetic and compassionate creatures. A Pisces will always seek to break down the divisions between reality and fantasy, of real life and dreams, so I’ll always recommend a book with magical realism at its heart for this watery sign. Vianne by Joanne Harris is the much-awaited prequel to the bestselling Chocolat and set six years before the story of Vianne and her chocolaterie. Alone and pregnant after having scattered her mother’s ashes in New York’s Hudson Bay, she finds herself working in a Marseille bistro with Louis, a café owner deep in grief, and two master chocolatiers, Guy and Mahmed. Expect characters that you’ll just adore, as well as magical, mouthwatering descriptions of the dishes Vianne cooks up in her Marseillaise bistro. A Pisces will love the subtle magical elements of Harris’ narrative, as well as the beautiful relationships she conjures.
