The gift that goes on giving.

I was given a 6 month subscription for my birthday and it is one of the best gifts I have been given. I love books and reading, I look forward to the being of each month and the expectation of what my new book shall be and where it will take me.

Our Country Friends by Gary Shteyngart

Rather tedious. Had it not been a gift - and perhaps instead a library book - I would not have forced myself to finish it. It certainly didn't live up to the blurb about being "so funny it would make you laugh until you cry"; "unbearably sad"; "reflective, earthy, humane..."

The Night Always Comes

I found this book quite disappointing. While the author’s effort to draw attention to those on the edges of society and struggling in poverty, I found the plot and characterisation somewhat one-dimensional. The procession of characters seemed more like an effort to highlight social issues than an attempt to make the story realistic and engaging. Each was drawn crudely without light and shade making it hard to empathise with them. I also thought the writing fell into “telling” rather than “showing” how characters felt. Ultimately while I was hoping for a happy ending for the central character, I was not committed enough to really care.

The World at the Brink 1983

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Made me appreciate what I had lived through at the time without realising the dangers.

Great to start with but then nothing

Activating the subscription was fairly straight forward and we received our first book quickly as we were told. However we are yet to receive our next 2 books which we were told would be with us at the start of each month. Its a great idea but only if it works!
